Host Optimization: Addressing Systemic Barriers: Nutrition, Smoking, and Behavioral

Even the most sophisticated wound care interventions fail when the patient’s systemic physiology cannot support tissue repair. Chronic wounds are often the visible manifestation of deeper biological disruptions—metabolic instability, anemia, renal disease, chronic inflammation, immune dysfunction, and endocrine imbalance.

This episode shifts the clinical lens from the wound bed to the host environment, emphasizing how systemic factors determine healing capacity. Faculty will explore the biologic mechanisms through which conditions such as diabetes, chronic kidney disease, anemia, obstructive sleep apnea, and inflammatory disorders impair wound repair.

Participants will learn how to recognize these “silent saboteurs” early, collaborate with interdisciplinary partners to optimize systemic health, and determine when wound-directed interventions must be delayed until host physiology improves. By addressing these upstream drivers, clinicians can transform stalled wounds into healing wounds while improving long-term patient outcomes.
