Although recommendations exist for the use of surgical prophylaxis for many types of orthopedic surgery including prosthetic joint implants and trauma surgery, there is a paucity of evidence to support its use in podiatric surgery. The studies that have been done show that the use of prophylactic antibiotics actually makes little difference in outcomes and the incidence of surgical site infections (SSI).  However, when even elective surgery is performed in a hospital or surgi-center, there are protocols in place that require the ordering of these drugs.  Hospitals that have "antimicrobial stewardship" programs in place to prevent the overuse of antibiotics still want you to overuse antibiotics for prophylaxis despite the lack of evidence! This session will explore the available data and recommendations.  We will cover both surgical prophylaxis and prophylaxis to prevent bacterial endocarditis.
